The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has recovered Rs 185.2 million from Tanveer Hussain Manji Director, Vita Pakistan Limited who is an accused in Tawana Pakistan Project (TPP) scam. Tawana Pakistan Project, a multifaceted pilot project (September 2002 to June 2005) was funded by the government to address poor nutritional status and school enrolment of the primary school-age girls.
The TPP project was designed to provide food items to schools located in high poverty areas including Lakki Marwat, D G Khan, Pak Patan, Badin, Gwadar and Turbat, he said. The investigators had found that Vita Pakistan supplied 'defective' milk, juices and biscuits worth million of rupees in the above six districts, an official said.
He said that NAB Rawapindi office had arrested Tanveer on January 31, from Lahore and produced before the Accountability Court the next day to get his physical remand. The accused remained in NAB's custody for 14 days. During the course of physical remand, the accused submitted an application for plea bargain amounting to Rs 185.2 million, which was accepted by Chairman NAB, a senior NAB official said.
He said the NAB had started a separate inquiry against Maaza Pakistan Ltd and Baz Creation, where the accused parties were allegedly involved in fraudulent activities relating to the purchase and other expenditures on different items in Tawana Pakistan Project.
The official said that under the project Rs 550 million was provided to another company Maaza Pakistan for provision of milk, juices and biscuits in two district including Mardan and Thatta. The company only made the supply of Rs 2 million while embezzled the rest of the money, he said.
