Out of the total 465 locomotives of Pakistan Railways (PR), only 185 are operational, PR officials told Senate's Standing Committee on Railways. The committee met here with Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri in the chair on Wednesday, where PR officials briefed the panel on terms and conditions along with procedure followed for giving land on lease and total land given on lease, containing price and name of department, organisation and individual.
The committee was also briefed about the total locomotives in perfect working condition and total number of locomotives which are totally irreparable. The committee also discussed the latest position regarding improvement or purchase of new locomotives for Railway.
Secretary Railways Arif Azeem informed the committee that Pakistan Railways had 465 engines of these only 185 were functional. "Several measures have been taken to address trains delay and the current management has succeeded in this regard as 80 percent trains reach in time at their respective stations," he added.
He further informed the body that the performance of Pakistan Railways would be improved within a year as it would soon add around 200 new engines to the fleet. "Most of the railway spare parts were being manufactured in the country; however, it is not possible to manufacture all the spare parts within the country," he added. On inquiry, the committee was informed that the issue of the shortage of oil with railways had been resolved with Pakistan State Oil (PSO).
