The two-day international Punjabi Conference has recommended that the new provinces in Pakistan must not be established on the basis of language. The concluding session of the conference was attended by Principal Oriental College and Chairman Punjabi Department Professor Dr Ismatullah Zahid, Professor Dr Shahbaz Malik, Sardar J Taigh Singh Annant, Professor Jameel Ahmed Paal, Professor Junaid Akram, Dr Naheed Shahid, Dr Nabeela Rehman, research scholars from various parts of country and a large number of students.
The participants demanded that the education of mother language must be made compulsory upto primary level. They demanded that parliamentarians be allowed to speak Punjabi language in Punjab Assembly. They demanded establishment of Punjabi department, creation of vacancies and appointment of relevant staff in the schools and colleges where Punjabi language was not being taught.
They demanded that advertisements must be released to Punjabi newspapers and magazines in accordance with the decided quota and the quota must also be increased. Meanwhile, PU Punjabi Department organised international mushaira at Sabzazar of Oriental College. Professor Anwar Masood, Ikram Majeed, Aizaz Ahmed Azar, Nasreen Anjum Bhatti, Dr Younas Ahqar, Dr Inam ul Haq Javed, Ashok Kumar Khatri, Majid Husain Awan, Shafiq Qureshi, Amir Arshad, Dr Tahir Shaheed presented poetry while Dr Naheed Shahid conducted the stage.
