Journalists covering Sindh Assembly's proceedings on Thursday staged a sit-in protest at the entrance of the provincial assembly's building against police torture of their colleague. A police man in plain clothes kicked at senior photographer, Zahid Rehman, fracturing his right hand finger just outside the assembly's building.
The incident drew journalists' anger, who were already being maltreated by police special branch ahead of the session. The journalists staged a sit-down protest and chanting slogans against the police. They demanded of the government to suspend the police man who after torturing the photographer escaped from the scene.
In the meantime, the main entrance was blocked for all sort of vehicles movement due to journalists' sit-in. Sindh Information Minister, Sharjeel Memon, came to the journalists for negotiation and assured the protesting journalists that the government will take action against the police personnel and urged them to end their agitation.
Latter, on the floor of the house, Sharjeel said that a police man had inflicted injuries on the photographer and fractured his finger. He announced the government would bear all the expenses on the treatment of the photographer. Speaker Sindh Assembly, Nisar Khuhro, also showed sympathy with the victim photographer and said the media friends should not be manhandled. He said the police should be made to realise the issue, as newsmen were here for coverage.
Additional security arrangements were made outside and inside the assembly ahead of the group photo session of lawmakers with Speaker Sindh Assembly and Chief Minister Sindh, which created disturbances for newsmen and MPAs. The special branch police was handling the security, who continued to mishandle and misbehave with newsmen, TV cameramen and photographers.
