The Supreme Court on Saturday decided to conduct hearing in response to Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf's letter to the Chief Justice of Pakistan through which he had requested him to form a judicial commission to investigate the Rental Power Plants case on March 11 (tomorrow).
The court registered the letter for appointment of an independent commission headed by Dr Shoaib Suddle, Federal Tax Ombudsman) in RPP case as Civil Miscellaneous Application for hearing and issued notice to Raja Pervez Ashraf to appear in person or through his lawyer(s) who had been appearing before the court during the earlier proceedings.
Ashraf requested Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Friday to form a commission with the contention that the RPP case was merely a propaganda against him and he is ready to be investigated. The Supreme Court rescinded all RPP contracts, declaring them illegal and non-transparent on March 30 last year. It issued directives to the Chairman NAB to proceed against all those, including the then Minister for Water and Power, Raja Pervez Ashraf, who caused billions of rupees of loss to the national exchequer.
