At a time when country is facing several challenges--deteriorating law and order, crippling economy, unemployment, energy crisis and increasing ratio of poverty, parliamentarians across the divide congratulated each other on Thursday on the completion of five-year term of the Lower House.
Setting aside routine agenda of the House permission was granted to the lawmakers to participate in a long and hectic discussion, in which they have praised the five-year performance of the August House, which literally failed in resolving the problems being faced by masses.
Parliamentarians showering blessings on each other continued till 5.30 pm and they had tried their level best for covering their failure in silk giving one reason or the other, but hollowness in their sermons was quite evident. They were proudly speaking that they have saved the democratic system in the country and were upbeat that they would be selected again by the masses in upcoming general elections as they had strived hard to strengthen democratic institutions.
Lawmakers sitting on the opposition benches while lauding the House on the completion of their term said that education, health, transport and other public sectors issues could not get due space in the government policies. Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf joined the proceeding of the House and held farewell meeting with parliamentarians by taking complete round of the ring, taking opportunity, lawmakers also handed over their application to the PM when he came to their seats as something is better than nothing. Politics in Pakistan is just to promote personal agendas, problems of masses get top priority on papers, but implementation on them needs time and resources, for which second term is needed to keep the momentum of welfare-oriented polices.
