Divisional Commissioner Hyderabad Jamal Mustafa Syed directed the Director General Health Sindh and MD WASA Hyderabad to conduct thorough survey in all urban Talukas of Hyderabad District and to identify the areas, where supplied drinking water has became contaminated and to submit report to him within a week time.
This he directed while presiding over a meeting to resolve the issue of contaminated water and adopt precautionary/preventive measures to avoid from supply of contaminated water which according to him, causing water born diseases. The meeting held at his main office today. The MD WASA, Director Health, representatives from EPA and Water Technologist and other officers attended the meeting.
The Divisional Commissioner Hyderabad said that the strategy to identify, address and aware the people is being prepared not only to ensure clear and safe drinking water to the inhabitants but to reduce their health bill as well. He said that WASA and Water Technologists are assigned for testing of water samples from the reported water contaminated areas within 24 hours and this would follow remedial measures by agency concerned, he added. He said that institutions aimed to ensure supply of potable drinking water to consumers at their door step, would not be allowed to spare itself from their responsibilities but they must have to ensure visible and efficient delivery to their beneficiaries.
He directed the management of Health Department to activate health education component of their department to create awareness among masses for adopting preventive measures to avoid waterborne and other communal diseases. He asked them to get the Lady Health Visitors (LHVs) trained and educated for creating awareness among masses specially when they visiting house to house in anti-polio campaign. He also asked the Water Technologists to arrange such seminars/lectures for LHVs and added that this strategy would also be applied in other districts, in case of success in Hyderabad.
The Divisional Commissioner Hyderabad Jamal Mustafa Syed also advised the elite citizens and other consumers to contact with MD WASA or Water Technologist in case of area under water contamination in their knowledge so that same could be redressed accordingly. The Divisional Commissioner also directed the authorities concerned also to ensure water quality at its source end and directed to evolve strategy to meet out threats, in case of contamination in water supply up to consumers' end.
