Earth Hour provides an opportunity to the responsible organisations to think again on ways to reduce the environmental footprint by taking proactive steps to save our planet. Engro believes in training the employees and public at large for their responsibility to reduce the carbon footprint and providing a healthy and better life to the next generations.
Earth Hour is a global initiative led by WWF. Individuals, businesses, governments and communities have been invited to turn out their lights for one hour on March 23, at 8:30 pm for an hour to show their support for environmentally sustainable action. The event began in Sydney in 2007, when two million people switched off their lights. Later, Earth Hour had created history as the largest voluntary action ever witnessed with participation across 135 countries, including the world's most recognised man-made marvels and natural wonders in a landmark environmental action. It also marked the start of something new - going Beyond the Hour to commit to lasting action on climate change.
To commemorate the occasion, Engro launched yet another innovative campaign to drive awareness into action themed as "One Planet - One Future". The campaign was aimed at raising the awareness level of employees as well as others with a pledge that they will not only actively participate in the earth hour activity but will also go beyond and make energy conservation a part of their daily lives and undertake sustainable environmental actions that go 'beyond the hour' to preserve and protect the planet.
Since its certification, Engro's Green Office Initiative has advocated a culture of environmental responsibility so that our employees adhere to the strictest standards and ethics with regards to environmental protection, in turn reducing the effects of global warming and increased carbon footprint.
As a result of our efforts we able to reduce our electricity consumption and registered a 27 percent conservation of electricity against the baseline in 2012. Similarly, a 32 percent decrease in paper usage and 52 percent reduction in waste against baseline benchmarks were also witnessed. These reductions resulted in a 31 percent reduction in our carbon footprint at the head office level.
Engro Corporation and its associated companies embarked upon a novel campaign to raise awareness of Earth Hour through a roadshow at their head office under the Green Office Initiative led by Wajid Hussain Junejo in a step to show solidarity with the global activity to showcase support for climate change and reduce environmental footprint under WWF umbrella. Through the Earth Hour and related events Engro aims at playing its role in creation of an environmentally aware society for a better and brighter tomorrow.-PR
