Despite clear directions from the Supreme Court and Election Commission a total of 180 members of the parliament and provincial assemblies including six sitting Senators have not yet got their degrees verified from the Higher Education Commission.
HEC sources said on Sunday that 55 members of the Assemblies have so far been disqualified by the Supreme Court and other courts for having fake degrees on the basis of HEC reports while cases of 17 members are still in different courts.
The sources said that ECP and HEC are in touch and the members who have not yet got their degrees verified would not be able to contest the elections. They said that the ECP had sent reminders to 249 members of parliament and provincial assemblies on 7th February 2013 asking them to get their degrees verified within 15 days. In response to the letter, about seventy members sent their degrees to HEC which were found to be genuine. The ECP in that letter had made it clear if the degrees were not got verified within the due date, they would be considered as fake and action would be taken against the members.
