Caretaker Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, former justice Tariq Pervez Khan, has said that conducting free, fair and impartial elections in the province is the constitutional obligation of the caretaker set-up. He expressed these views while chairing the first meeting of the caretaker provincial cabinet, here on Thursday.
The meeting reviewed in detail the preparations of the provincial election commission and other concerned departments for the upcoming general election and the law and order situation in the province. Besides members of the caretaker cabinet, KP Chief Secretary Ghulam Dastagir Akhtar, Inspector General Police Akbar Khan Hoti, Additional Chief Secretary Attaullah Khan Toro, Secretary Administration Hifz-ur-Rehman, Secretary Home and Tribal Affairs Azam Khan, Secretary Finance Sahibzada Saeed, Secretary Law and Parliamentary Affairs Mohammad Arifeen, Secretary Local government Aurangzeb Khan, Secretary Information Azmat Hanif Orakzai and Provincial Election Commissioner Sono Khan Baloch attended the meeting. The meeting was briefed about the preparations for the upcoming general election and law and order situation in the province with special reference to the elections.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said that according to the constitution of the country, holding fair and transparent elections was the duty of the election commission, however, there was a provision for caretaker government in the constitution to help and assist the election commission in conducting elections in a peaceful environment. He said that although the caretaker government was not an elected one, it had a huge responsibility of maintaining and creating peaceful environment to ensure free and fair elections.
