Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has declared 305, out of 1,572 polling station of Multan district, as most sensitive where armed clashes and murders were reported in previous elections, while 374 polling stations were declared as sensitive and remaining 893 were generally normal.
Regional Election Commissioner Ashfaq Ahmed Sarwar said that Election commission will publish the final list of polling stations, number of voters on April 7. Official sources said that returning officers were authorised to increase the number of polling station to facilitate the voters. However no polling station would be established at private property.
The Army on Thursday asked the Election Commission of Pakistan for handing over the final list of sensitive polling stations that would be guarded by military and paramilitary troops during the general polls. It is learnt that a request in this regard was forwarded on Friday to the ECP. Army field formations are to be assigned duties at the polling stations.
Sources said that the decision of sending a request to the ECP was taken during the 159th Corps Commanders Conference at the General Headquarters having Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani in chair. This is the second meeting of corps commanders in the ongoing month and first after the establishment of the caretaker government.The Army had assured the provision of security during general elections, following a meeting between Chief Election Commissioner former Justice Fakhruddin G Ebrahim and General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani in December 2012.
