The Supreme Court on Monday said it would decide whether or not it should make the Lal Masjid Commission's report public. It made these observations after it briefly examined the contents of this report. A three-member bench led by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry resumed the hearing of the Lal Masjid operation case.
Tariq Asad, the counsel for Lal Masjid cleric, urged the court to direct the Commission on Lal Masjid to record the statement of former president and army chief Pervez Musharraf. He further prayed the bench to direct the government to place the name of Musharraf on ECL.
Upon this, the bench said that Musharraf's name had already been placed on ECL on the directions of Sindh High Court; however, Asad insisted that Musharraf's name was not still placed on ECL. Regarding his plea to record Musharraf statement, the Chief Justice Chaudhry told him that they would go through the contents of the commission's report before they passed any order in this regard.
During the course of proceedings, Lal Masjid Commission report and other confidential documents were presented before the bench in a sealed envelope. Briefly examining the commission's report, the court observed that the contents of the report required a thorough review before these could be made public. The hearing of case was adjourned for two weeks.
