The Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) has miserably failed to curb the use of unfair means during the on going SSC part I and II examinations, sources said on Saturday. The Matric Board had set up hundreds of examination centres in the city to conduct examinations, which sources said had been hijacked by 'outsiders' backed by influential persons, making the outcome of the examination process dubious.
Invigilators are completely helpless as members of the cheating mafia, wielding considerable clout, were minting money, allowing candidates to 'solve' papers using unfair means. These unscrupulous elements remained active outside the examination centres, predominantly centres of male candidates, while officials of BSEK and vigilance teams played the role of silent spectator. "Whenever we try to stop cheating during exams, members of this powerful mafia intervene... They misbehave with us. We cannot do anything because they are supported by various political groups," an invigilator told this correspondent. He insisted that strict action should be taken against students and teachers involved in the malpractice, but did not specify how to do this.
A large number of students had been caught using unfair means during the examinations, but sources claimed that only a few of them were punished, adding that a majority of the cases were 'resolved' as soon as Invigilators were bribed. Sources said that there was no security for members of the inspection teams and they felt insecure because most violators threaten them of dire consequences.
Sources said that examination centres established in Lyari Town were completely in the grip of criminal gangs as students were forced to 'buy' solved papers. Otherwise, sources claimed, they were not allowed to hold the scheduled papers. According to sources, even officials of law-enforcement agencies were reluctant to take any action against criminal elements. They said that Government Boys Secondary School Lyari-1, Government Boys Secondary School Lyari-2 and 3 have emerged to be among the most corrupt centres in their respective localities.
