President of the Thai Senate, Nikom Wairapanij accompanied by other member of his delegation visited the Museum and the Buddhist monastery of Jaulian at Taxila. He was received by the Director, Archaeology and Museums, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Nidaullah Sehrai at Jaulian monastery, who also briefed him about the architecture of Stupa and monastery in Gandhara.
He explained the origin and development of the Gandharan stupa, which is different from the Indian stupa. He said that Indian stupa is dwarf in height while the Gandharan stupa is a tower like structure, which shoots up in the air and from which the Chinese pagoda are derived. The guest showed interest in the history and development of the Buddhist art of Gandhara. He was informed that in Taxila stucco (lime plaster) sculptures are used to embellishment the sacred area. It was due to the non-availability of schist stone which was used in the Gandhara region (Peshawar valley).
