Air traffic management in Pakistani environment and aviation security in general would greatly benefit regional aviation community, according to latest research conducted here.
The research was undertaken by Dr Muhammad Iqbal who has been awarded PhD by Karachi on his research which was based on 'Organisational behaviour' and 'Human Resource' focusing on Air Traffic Management titled as "Impact of Workplace Stress on Organisational Performance - an Analytical Study of Air Traffic Controllers of Pakistan."
The thesis was evaluated by two external professors who approved it without any change - one was Professor Dr Flouris from Hellenic American University, Greece; and the other was Professor Dr Alex from University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia; while Professor Dr Abdul Latif, Chairman of Higher Studies and Research, International Islamic University, Islamabad supervised the research.
The purpose of study was to investigate the impact of workplace stress of air traffic controllers, Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), on organisational performance. Sample was selected from Air Traffic Controllers of CAA by using the technique of proportionate random sampling. This is a time series study, which was undertaken in two phases, Study-1 in 2006, and the Study-2 in 2010. Its results show that there is a negative relationship between workplace stress and organisational performance. As hypothesised, stress coping strategies, health issues, and job control have a meditational affect between workplace stress and organisational performance; while job satisfaction has moderating affect between workplace stress and organisational performance.
Dr Flouris considered this research as (a) a unique topic; (b) a robust and complex research question; (c) a thorough literature review; (d) an appropriate methodology and (e) well structured conclusions; and concluded that Dr Iqbal has managed to merge organisational behaviour theory with contemporary practice in regard to workplace performance in a high risk sector such as Air Traffic Management.
