Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Tuesday held a protest against indifferent attitude of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) over its complaints about alleged rigging during the recent general elections. A large number of PTI supporters from all walks of life, including women, gathered outside the Lahore Press Club and chanted 'we want justice'. They voiced their concern over the apathetic behaviour of the ECP towards PTI complaints about the poll rigging.
They shouted that the ECP's 'silent approach' over the matter is not acceptable to them. They also shouted slogans against MQM chief Altaf Hussain, for his alleged involvement in the killing of a PTI leader Zahra Shahid Hussain in Karachi. On the occasion, the PTI leaders, including Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Ejaz Chaudhary, Yasmeen Rashid, Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri, Mahmooduer Rasheed and Aleem Khan, we present in the protest.
While addressing the PTI supporters, PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi said not only the PTI but other political parties also complained about poll rigging and they are not ready to accept the election results. "The people are questioning the ECP's silence over the rigging and they are of firm belief that injustice has been done to them," he added.
Qureshi stated that they are ready to accept the results but they will not allow anyone to rob the people of their mandate. "If we keep silence over the matter, the people will lose trust in the electoral process," he added.
He announced that on May 24, they will gather in Islamabad to exercise their democratic and constitutions rights to voice their point of view on the elections issue. He assured the supporters that after the recount of votes in certain constituencies, if the PTI's concern of rigging is proven correct then its protests will be justified; otherwise they will accept the mandate. "After the elections, the PTI has emerged as the second biggest political party in terms of vote despite all the 'hurdles' created in its way during the election. No doubt, we have risen as a political force in the country," he added.
He said in and outside the Parliament, the PTI will play an effective opposition role; it will not act as a 'friendly opposition'. PTI President Punjab Ejaz Chaudhary announced that Imran Khan will be discharged from the hospital on Wednesday (today) and will join protests. He said only after recounting of votes and verification of finger-impressions justice will be done. "The Chief Justice of Pakistan should follow dictum of 'justice is blind'; one-sided justice will not be acceptable," he added.
