The Supreme Court on Thursday issued a notice to Federal Secretary Finance to file comments in a case relating to a mega scam pertaining to Nandipur power project. A 3-member bench of the Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry heard the petition filed by PML-N's leader Khawaja Asif.
Recalling Justice Rehmat Hussain Jaffari Commission's report, Asif said a delay in Nandipur project resulted in a loss of Rs 113 billion to the national kitty and the project was scheduled to be completed in 2011. He further claimed that with the passage of time such a huge loss would not be recoverable whereas there were chances that the machinery of the project would become dysfunctional. Khawaja told the bench that Rs 720 million was paid as demurrages.
Khawaja Tariq Rahim, the counsel for ministry of water and power, submitted that a sovereign guarantee of Rs 24 billion was required in the current matter; to which the Chief Justice said in the light mood that the court shall implore the federal finance secretary to release the amount so that delay in the project could be avoided. During the proceedings, former law secretary Masood Chisti was also present in response to a court notice. The hearing of matter was adjourned till May 28.
