Deputy Inspector General (DIG) National Highways and Motorway Police Dr Muhammed Shafiq has said police will stiffen procedures against motorists who commit lane violations. Lane and line discipline is route to safety. While launching of two-week Briefing Campaign against the use of 2nd lane by motorists here said some motorists did not abide by the lane rules, contribute to blocking traffic and frustrating other motorists.
He said this offence also causes many accidents as some motorists violate lane rules to escape traffic, but they do not realise that they are causing more traffic problems by doing that. He further said Lane violations topped the list of traffic offences reported by NH&MP in the last year 2012 with 30,147 offences.
DIG Dr Muhammed Shafiq further said that poor lane discipline is a violation that needs special and serious attention. He said that some drivers are all over the place and they don't seem to realise that second lane on highways can only be used for overtaking. Besides inconvenience to other road users, this kind of inconsiderate driving is also very dangerous not only for themselves but for other road users too.
In this regard special teams have been formed who are visiting different Goods Transport Terminals, Bus Addas, Highway Hotels and other places to brief and educate the drivers of HTVs and PSVs about the correct use of lanes on highways. The officers are holding special briefing session with different transport unions besides briefing the drivers on all the Toll Plazas from Lahore to Rahim Yar Khan. DIG further directed that all the officers of NH&MP should work hard to maintain discipline on all the national highways by briefing and enforcement.
