Due to fast melting of snow over the mountains after increase in day temperature, the water flow in the mighty Indus has touched record 2,72,000 cusecs in the month of June in a decade. The previous highest flow of 2,05,000 cusecs was in the year 2005 on June 12.
Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) engineers told Business Recorder here on Wednesday that of this huge inflow, Indus River System Authority (Irsa) was releasing 1,05,000 cusecs downstream Tarbela Dam for hydel power generation and crop irrigation, and retaining about 1,67,000 cusecs water in the reservoir.
The water level in the dam has gone over 1460 feet with the storage of 2 MAF water which is also a record in the month of June. With the present running water in the Indus River, the dam is being filled by almost eight feet per day. Meanwhile, River Kabul is in high flood at Nowshera with a flow of 126000 cusecs, which is also being put in the Indus River near Attock Bridge. River Jhelum is flowing with 68,000 cusecs water at Mangla and the river Chenab with 81,900 cusecs at Marala near Sialkot.
