The leader of the opposition in the Punjab Assembly is entitled to all perks, allowances and privilege attached to the portfolio of provincial minister. Leading legal expert Mian Jaffer Hussain told APP here on Sunday that under the Punjab Ministers (Salaries, Allowances and Privileges) Act 1975, the leader of opposition is entitled to the salary, allowances and privileges as admissible to a provincial minister.
However, he will be entitled to one official telephone at office and residence both for official and private use and that the liability of government in respect of two telephones installed shall not exceed the amount equal to 10,000 local calls collectively for both telephones.
The following are the perks of leader of the opposition:-
1) Salary Rs 35000 per month. 2) Equipment Allowance Rs 10,000 on appointment for lifetime of assembly. 3) Allowance on taking up and laying down the office: Actual travelling expenses for himself and his family with transportation along with two personal servants. 4) Sumptuary Allowance: Rs 10,000 per mensem. 5) Transport: One official car maintained at government expenses throughout his term of office. However, Chief Minister may withhold this facility to a minister who is removed on misconduct and misbehaviour. 6) Free of cost official residence including electricity and gas charges in case of non availability of official residence, can requisite house at government expenses or 25,000 per month house rent. 7) Travelling Allowance:-He will be treated first grade officer for travelling on official duty. 8) Compensation in case of air accident:- Rs 500,000 in case of death. 9) Daily Allowance:-Rs 1000 per day. Less than eight hour one half daily allowance admissible. 10) Travelling Allowance for foreign tour:- On official business outside Pakistan, first class air fare. 11) Free medical facility for whole of family including parents and step-sons and daughters. 12) Personal Staff: As allowed from time to time. 13) Discretionary Grant:- Rs 300.000 will be placed at his disposal per annum for making discretionary grants in such manners as may be prescribed. 14) Holidaying Abroad: Minister may while holidaying abroad draw his full pay in foreign exchange for the period spent abroad.
