The Punjab government has allocated an amount of Rs 40 billion in the Budget 2013-2014 for education sector as against Rs 31 billion for 2012-2013 showing an increase of 30-percent. As per budget document, Rs 15.5 billion have been allocated for school education, Rs 6 billion for higher education, Rs 1.14 billion for special education and Rs 1.605 billion for literacy.
In line with the Chief Minister's Education Sector Road Map, substantial funds have been allocated in the development budget which includes Rs 3 billion for Danish schools, Rs 2 billion for Punjab Education Endowment Fund, Rs 7,500 million for Punjab Education Foundation, Rs 500 million for Punjab Technology University and Rs 1,500 million for internship program and Rs 1500 million for TEVTA and TVTEC.
In order to equip the students with information technology, the government will establish 1000 IT labs in elementary schools along with the replacement of 515 existing schools. With a view to increase the retention rate by 50 percent up to class-V, school education has proposed in the ADP 2013-2014 a scheme to provide "Kids Rooms" in 1000 primary schools. The government is going to establish a Knowledge City on a piece of land on 705 acres at Dera Rakh Chahal near Lahore for the establishment of sub campuses and basic information units at renowned universities of Pakistan as well as abroad.
