The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed Pepco Managing Director Zargham Eshaq Khan to submit area-wise equitable power distribution details to all categories of consumers throughout the country and also asked Chief Executive Officers of the Discos to remain present in the court during the next hearing.
Hearing a suo motu case regarding unprecedented loadshedding in the country, a 3-judge bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry also issued notice to MD Sarhad Hydel Development Organisation (SHYDO) to submit report on a potential hydel power projects. The Court also asked MD Private Power Infrastructure Board N A Zuberi to submit during the next hearing details of commissioned and under-process power projects.
During the course of hearing, Attorney General for Pakistan Munir A Malik told the bench that the present government''s energy policy was in the pipeline; to which the Chief Justice underscored the need for reigning in power theft. Otherwise, he warned, the court would pass an order to eradicate the menace. The Chief Justice categorically observed that in the long run hydel power generation would be the only solution to prevailing energy problem; so projects should be launched to avail the hydel resources in the country.
The court was informed that litigation relating to some power generation units was going on; to which the bench sought details of such litigation for passing an appropriate order during the next hearing in the matter. Later, the hearing of case was adjourned till July 1.
