A workshop on 'Synopsis, Thesis and Research Project Writing' was organised at the University of Karachi. An official of the institution said on Saturday that by the University of Karachi and Higher Education Commission (HEC) in collaboration with Institute of Space and Planetary Astrophysics (ISPA).
The workshop was chaired by Professor Dr Shahana Urooj Kazmi, Director, ISPA and Dean, Faculty of Science. Dr Javed Iqbal, Incharge of ISPA highlighted the objectives of the workshop contributions of faculty of the institute in postgraduate degree programmes. Dr Shahana Urooj Kazmi and Dr Qamar Javed of ISRA University, Dr Ayub Yousufzai (KU), Dr Arif Hussain of BIZTEC, and Dr Sheikh Ajaz Rasool gave detailed presentations about synopsis, thesis, research project writing and compilations high lightening the bottlenecks that can be faced by the young scholars during thesis writing.
The interactive workshop was attended by more than 100 M. Phil, Ph.D. students and Faculty, who actively participated in the question answer session and also shared their individual experiences. Perseverance, asking the right questions with background knowledge, having the right bent of mind, workable innovative hypothesis and objectives, research methodology, proper reference citation and bibliography are important components acceptable synopsis as well as thesis and research project.
Professor Dr Shahana highlighted the importance of writing Synopsis, Thesis, Research projects and said that research should be for the sake of getting new knowledge, interest and love for research and creativity rather than just getting a degree for promotion or higher grade.
In order to achieve your research objectives you need to earn research grant by submitting well developed proposals in accordance to the specifications of funding agencies, she told the participants. As the Convenor of Postgraduate Admission Committee, Shahana said that although we launched the new MS./M.Phil/ MD degree programme with 24 credit hours course work in 2008 in 58 departments at Karachi University in accordance with the HEC guidelines but as of today KU has not introduced Course Work for PhD students as the process of development of courses, their approval by Board of Studies of various Departments, Faculties and Academic council is still ongoing. The 5th Batch of M.Phil/MS/MD /PhD Admissions 2013 at Karachi University is in its final stages. The list of successful candidates will be uploaded on KU website on July 2.
She said that we are trying our best to provide best infrastructural facilities for serious research scholars and developing a very vibrant Research Culture at Karachi University. Shahana also elaborated the aims and objectives of the newly established Office of Research Innovation and Commercialisation at Karachi University under an HEC supported project, which would exclusively work to motivate young researchers, faculty members and scholars to get funding support for their proposed innovative research projects from international and national agencies and to create a better linkage between young researchers and the funding agencies and relevant industry for future commercialisation of research products.
