Teaching and non-teaching staff (BPS 1-14) of Sindh Education department, who were appointed in 2012, on Wednesday staged a protest rally under the banner of New Teachers Action Committee (NTAC) against non-payments of their salaries for the last 11 months.
The rally, which started from Karachi Press Club, culminated outside Sindh Assembly building, which was attended by large number of teaching and non-teaching staff, demanding early release of their salaries. They said that former PPP-led Sindh government had appointed four thousands teaching and non-teaching staff in education department, who had not been paid salaries for the last 11 months.
The teachers gathered outside Karachi Press Club and tried to march towards Sindh Secretariat but the rally stopped near Sindh Assembly. One of the protesting teachers, Abu-Bakar Abro, tried to commit self-immolation but was saved by his colleagues. The victim received severe burnt injuries and was shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.
On this occasion, NTAC leaders said that newly appointed teachers and other staff members had not been paid salaries for last eleven months since their appointments. They demanded Chief Justice of Pakistan to take suo motu notice of the issue. The teachers carrying banners and placards chanted slogans against the Sindh government. They ended their protest after Secretary Education Sindh assured them that the issue would be resolved within few days.
