All-rounder Shahid Afridi, batsman Umar Akmal and opening batsman Ahmed Shahzad have been recalled to Pakistan's 16-member ODI and 15-member T20 squad for the limited-over tour of the West Indies starting later this month, while wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal, all-rounder Shoaib Malik and batsman Imran Farhat who failed to perform in the recently held Champions Trophy have been dropped.
-- Kamran Akmal, Shoaib Malik and Imran Farhat dropped The ODI squad also features the uncapped 21-year-old wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan. Zulfiqar Babar (34), who has been part of the domestic circuit for over 10-year figures in the T20 squad.
Announcing the squad, Pakistan's Chief Selector Iqbal Qasim who was accompanied by Misbah-ul-Haq and Muhammad Hafeez told reporters that Shahid Afridi and Umar Akmal have been included in the ODI as well as Twenty20 sides. Umar Akmal would also keep wickets, he said. With the induction of Shahid Afridi in the team, there will be stability in lower order batting while Afridi would also help further strengthen the bowling. He said fitness level of Shahid Afridi is very good which proves his strength. In reply to a question, Qasim said young players have been included in the side which will provide exposure to them. He said Mohammad Rizwan has been included in the side as a wicket keeper.
To another query, he said the players who were dropped can stage come back by showing performance. Misbah has been retained as team's ODI captain while Muhammad Hafeez will lead the T20 side. ODI skipper Misbah admitted defeat in recently held Champions Trophy and expressed displeasure for not performing in this mega event. He said a balanced side has been selected for the West Indian tour with consensus of team management and selection committee. He added that wickets of West Indies suit to Pakistani players.
Paceman Umar Gul remains sidelined after undergoing knee surgery in May. The ODI squad: Nasir Jamshed, Ahmed Shahzad, Muhammad Hafeez, Misbah-ul-Haq, Asad Shafiq, Umar Akmal, Saeed Ajmal, Wahab Riaz, Shahid Afridi, Junaid Khan, Muhammad Irfan, Asad Ali, Umar Amin, Mohammad Rizwan, Abdur Rehman and Haris Sohail. T20 squad: Nasir Jamshed, Ahmed Shahzad, Muhammad Hafeez, Haris Sohail, Umar Akmal, Hammad Azam, Shahid Afridi, Saeed Ajmal, Sohail Tanveer, Wahab Riaz, Muhammad Irfan, Asad Ali, Umar Ameen, Zulfikar Babar and Junaid Khan.
