The Sub-committee of the Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights Tuesday proposed that for better global co-ordination on Human Rights issues a slot of Director General Human Rights be created in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The committee said that for better projection of human rights issues, the slot is also pivotal for Pakistan's foreign policy and international image.
The committee which met with Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed in the chair, recommended that Ministry of Human Rights be restored and the subject should be made compulsory for all the training courses of Law enforcement agencies, including the police, armed forces, intelligence and civil administration. The committee further recommended establishment of Journalist Defence Fund to help journalists who become victims of violence and terrorism.
Former Secretary Human Rights Shaigan Shah and human rights activist Naseem Azhar agreed with the proposals of the Sub-committee. The chairman committee, Senator Mushaid Hussain Syed while proposing for the establishment of "Journalist Defence Fund", said that the provision of adequate security to the working journalists is the government's responsibility. Life, health and accident insurance policies must be initiated for Journalists, Senator Mushahid added.
For fighting natural and man-made disasters, Ministry of Disaster Management should be created to save precious human lives through timely assistance, the committee recommended. About the creation of a separate ministry of disaster management, Senator Mushaid Hussain Syed said that it would provide security and relief to the displaced people. He said that the Drug Regulatory Authority (DRA) should be strengthened so that it could take action against fake drug manufacturers and ban the sale of spurious drugs.
