The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) has directed the relevant authorities to restore gas supply to 350 CNG stations, which was suspended by the authority on July 6 on the plea that these stations were set up in residential areas. The Authority had cancelled licences of the CNG outlets situated near populated areas and suspended gas supply to these stations on the orders of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
The move was rejected by All Pakistan CNG Association (APCNGA) stating that all the petrol pumps and CNG operators had taken NOC from twelve different departments under the policy of the ministry of petroleum before commencing commercial operations. These departments included Ogra, Explosives Department, Traffic Police, TMA, Environmental Protection Agency, electricity and gas distribution companies, district administration, national and provincial highway authorities and Civil Aviation Authority.
According sources, the regulatory body, through a letter, has issued directions to the management of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGC) to restore gas supply to 350 CNG stations. Sources said there were some 3,500 CNG stations countrywide fuelling some four million vehicles and utilising about 350 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) of gas, but now the government was seriously considering to limit the use of CNG due to energy crisis.
