Pakistan Railways (PR) is mulling over restarting Twin Cities Train Service between Islamabad and Rawalpindi from October. This scheme was launched twice in the past but failed miserably to generate any revenue and cost millions of rupees loss. The train service will be started from Mareer Bridge Rawalpindi to Ninth Avenue, Seven-Up Chowk Islamabad.
The train service, which was first started in 1992-93 with the name of People's Train Service by the Pakistan Railways in collaboration with the Capital Development Authority (CDA), is going to be started again. Earlier, the train service was closed down due to lack of revenue generation. In this regard, work on the extension of Margalla Station is in progress and it is hoped that the track will be completed till September 30. The track will be extended to Ninth Avenue and a small station will be constructed at Seven-Up Chowk.
The train will have one engine and four to five bogies. The project is a joint venture of Pakistan Railways and CDA.
However, social circles have expressed reservations over the proposed re-launch of this twice-flopped scheme.
