Lahore High Court Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial has directed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Khan Baig to file a comprehensive report in the court about details of attacks on courts premises, arrest of accused and action taken in this regard against delinquent police officials. The CJ also directed IGP to file the report within ten days. A division bench headed by the CJ was hearing a petition against poor security arrangements at the courts premises.
Appearing before the court, the IGP said reforms are being made in operations and investigation wings of the Punjab police. He said through these reforms, police officers would be imparted training on modern lines and they would be deputed at sensitive places. At this the court expressed resentment and rejected his reply. The CJ said during last six months, several incidents of attacks had happen at the premises of sessions court and police can arrest none of the accused.
He asked the IGP that he should tell the court if he had any pressure in this regard. He remarked that no one can save the society from degradation if the judicial system is ruined. He said the people would take the system in their hands if judges, litigants and lawyers are not given security.
The CJ on Thursday had constituted a special division bench to hear a petition questioning insufficient security measures on the court premises and inefficiency on part of law enforcement agencies, which resulted in many untoward incidents involving assassination of not only litigants but also lawyers. Kashif Pasha, advocate for the petitioner, has voiced concern saying that law and order situation was not upto the mark all over the country but increasing ugly events in court premises had made the situation worse, creating a sense of terror.
