Ordinance to remove legal hitch: government, opposition agree to appoint Bhagwandas as NAB chief
The government and opposition have agreed to appoint former Justice Rana Bhagwandas as chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), it was learnt. According to sources, the government had convinced the opposition to draft an ordinance on Rana Bhagwandas appointment as NAB chief. The ordinance will amend the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) Act to remove the FPSC chairman's designation from the category of Services of Pakistan, the sources added.
When contacted, Senator Zafar Ali Shah of PML-N said that under the existing law, the FPSC chairman could not hold another office after retirement. He said that there was a need to amend the FPSC Act for the appointment of Rana Bhaqwandas as NAB chairman. He said that after Eid the government and opposition will hold negotiations on the issue.
It is pertinent to mention here that the opposition leader had proposed the names of former justices Rana Bhagwandas and Sardar Raza Khan while the government had proposed the names of former justice Rehmat Hussain Jaffery and Hassan Zaheer for the office of NAB chairman.
