The twin cities of Rawalpindi/ Islamabad received heavy rainfall on Tuesday, creating flood-like situation in the congested and low lying areas, especially along Nullah Lai. According to Met Office, the twin cities received 85 mm rainfall, causing small surge in notorious Nullah Lai in Rawalpindi and inundating roads and streets in the federal capital with rainwater.
Even the office of Capital Development Authority (CDA) was filled with rain water exposing the sewage system of the civic body of the federal capital. The rainwater entered into houses in G-6 sector and other low lying areas of the capital, causing much inconvenience to the people that were draining out water from the houses by using utensils.
The rainfall and the subsequent accumulation of rainwater in commercial markets kept visitors at bay from shopping though Eid shopping is gradually gaining momentum in the twin cities ahead of the religious festival. The drains along main traffic arteries overflowed, causing flooding on roads, resulting in traffic congestion and forcing the wardens to manually manage vehicular movement.
In Rawalpindi, the situation was worst where the narrow streets and roads were filled with rainwater, resulting in a distressing condition for people particularly those with vehicles that remained stranded for hours on roads. The Committee Chowk underpass turned into a pool where rainwater accumulated in large quantity thus blocking the passage for vehicles. The authorities used suction pumps to drain out the water.
The decades old sewage system in the garrison city choked resulting in overflow of rainwater. Commercial markets like Raja Bazaar, Rawalpindi Sadar, Commercial Market, Benazir Bhutto Road and Sadiqabad presented a deserted look, as the rainwater turned the places inaccessible to pedestrians and motorists. The Met Office has predicted more rains in the coming days as the rainy season will prevail across the country including Rawalpindi and Islamabad for days to come.
