Pakistan may produce 13.5 million bales of cotton in current season. Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) has decided to issue the cotton arrival report on November 3, instead of October 18 due to Eid holidays. Addressing a joint press conference here on Sunday, PCGA Chairman Mukhtar Ahmed Baloch, Vice Chairman Sheikh Aasim Saeed, Chairman of Ginners Group Haji Muhammad Akram and Shehzad Ali Khan reiterated their demand that cotton import should not be allowed from India or any other country, as according to them local production was sufficient to meet the textile industry's requirement.
They said that Pakistan produced the best quality of cotton, which was in great demand in different countries.
They were of the view that farmers and ginners were two wheels of a carriage and they could not ignore or exploit each other. They assured to raise voice for the rights of the growers at all fora.
They demanded of the government to ensure supply of good quality, well-germinated seed to the farmers on subsidised rates through provincial seed corporations. They also demanded that fertilisers, pesticides, diesel and farm implements be provided on concessional rates to minimise the cost of production.
They rejected the increase in POL products' prices, electricity and gas tariffs, and levy of unjust taxes on telecommunication means.
The PCGA Chairman who had attended the FPCCI meeting told the meeting that the business community had given ten days to the government for holding talks with the representatives of associations, chambers and other organisations so that the rulers could be apprised of the business community's problems.
They also appealed to the FBR Chairman issue a circular for withdrawal of notices and imposition of fines under CREST programme.
