Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Chaudhry Muhammad Barjees Tahir has said that people of Kashmir should have a right of plebiscite and the issue should be resolved as per the UN resolutions.
Recounting 120-day performance of his ministry here on Monday, the minister said that Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif had directed the ministry to improve its efficiency, eliminate corruption, maintain discipline, develop good co-ordination between Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan governments, use development funds in transparent manner, reduce non-developmental expenses and to manage the Jammu and Kashmir state property in a better way.
The minister said that meeting was called to properly analyse the problems related to Jammu and Kashmir state property. He said illegal occupants of commercial, agriculture or residential lands had been identified and notices had also been issued to them besides taking action against defaulters. He said that in 120 days the rent of Kashmir state property had improved a lot and now it was Rs 70 million which was Rs 40 million in the past. In coming three months it would be decided that how much further it has to be improved, he added. He also urged the people of Lahore to pay reasonable rent for using Kashmir property so that its revenue could be improved. The minister said that AJK and GB governments had improved transparency for awarding tenders of development projects and officers of good repute had been posted for important tasks. He said that in last 120 days the ministry had been made corruption free.
Barjees Tahir said that AJK and GB governments had been directed not to start any new development scheme until the completion of ongoing schemes. The minister said that compensation and re-settlement work regarding Mangla Raising project had been reviewed. He said that steps had been taken to stop the smuggling of wheat from GB, adding that Food Department would set up its sale point in the area. He said that setting up new flour mills had been completely banned while sale point of Food department would be monitored by the administration concerned.
The minister said that by adopting these steps government would save a subsidy of Rs 2 billion. He said that six accused of Nanga Parbat and Chilas incident had been arrested. The GB government has been directed to improve security arrangements and special attention should be given on security of foreigners, he said and added that the AJK government had also been directed to make foolproof security arrangements for the Chinese workers and training would also be given to Gilgit Scouts, on the direction of Prime Minister, for ensuring proper security of Chinese workers. Barjees said that re-settlement plan was being evolved for the affected people of Attabad Lake. He said that inquires were being carried out in AJK Council against corrupt officials and recoveries were also being made. Barjees Tahir said that he directed to complete the development work of Sardar Abbass colony which had been set up by AJK Council.
