Eid shopping has picked up momentum in the provincial metropolis Peshawar, as shoppers especially women thronged to bazaars and markets. Women shoppers are seen busy at shops of cosmetic, jewellery, embroidery clothes, garments, footwear outlets, and artificial jewellery in Peshawar Saddar markets, Mina Bazaar and Qissa Khawani market.
The jubilant mood of young girls, women and youth is in full swing and shopping is gradually geared up. Colourful Eid stalls, set up at various points, are offering different kinds of cosmetics‚ earrings‚ gleaming bangles‚ embroidered clothes‚ jewellery and colourful dresses. Also, a large number of makeshift shops have sprung up on the pavements of the city.
Eidul Azha, the second biggest religious festival, is celebrated among Muslims to commemorate the supreme sacrifice of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) and Hazrat Ismail (AS), by slaughtering animals in this occasion. By taking of advantage of this special occasion, the shopkeepers have raised prices but many have displayed 'sale' signs to hoodwink customers. Women of all ages have started visiting bazaars and shopping malls to buy clothes and shoes‚ while bangles' sale is slowly picking up.
Shopkeepers have been seen sitting idle‚ waiting for prospective buyers. Several shoppers said that due to high prices‚ many things were beyond their purchasing power and they were compelled to just window shop.In some localities‚ Eid cards sellers have set up stalls outside shops to attract customers‚ but there are few buyers.
Meanwhile‚ police claimed to have made foolproof security arrangements for the protection of the people at various shopping centres‚ markets and public places. To ensure security of female‚ lady police have also been deployed in various busy shopping malls at Saddar Bazaar‚ Qissa Khawani, Kohati bazaar, Mina bazaar, Shaheen and university and other busy markets of the city.
