The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has made arrangements for disposing of offal and other animal waste into ditches dug at around 20 different sites in the city, said KMC Administrator Saqib Ahmad Soomro at a meeting held on Tuesday to finalise arrangements for Eidul Azha. He said a ban had already been imposed on disposal of offal and other waste in nullahs and rivers.
Meanwhile, a fleet of 400 KMC and 4,333 other vehicles and machinery of District Municipal Corporations would be part of arrangements made for offal' removal during three days of Eidul Azha. A staff comprising 6,400 workers would undertake the manual work required for the exercise across the city. The KMC Administrator said directors serving in grade 17 and above had also been assigned responsibilities at 18 different designated corridors in the city to streamline offal' removal exercise during the next three days.
He warned that any lapse in the work would result in strict action against the assigned officials. The KMC Administrator said there would be no holiday for KMC officials and staffers during three-day Eid celebrations and they would be required to realise their responsibility till completion of offal and other relevant waste removal and safe disposal work.
Soomro said the exercise might be difficult but through sincere efforts it could be undertaken, adding citizens would also be appealed to undertake Mohallah level intervention, place the waste at selected and prominent site enabling KMC workers to collect the same without any difficulty. He said emergency centres had been established in all five district of the city while all cantonment boards functional in Karachi were also being actively involved for an efficient strategy meant to provide all needed assistance and above all a healthy environment during Eidul Azha.
