Former Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said CoAS should not have announced his retirement because it is the duty of government to declare it. Nawaz Sharif should consult and take the Parliament into confidence before the major appointments.
Talking to newsmen here he said I think that present government is not delaying the appointment of Chief of Army Staff but it is doing work on this issue very carefully. Supporting the dialogues with Taliban, Gilani said these must be held on the basis of equality.
He said opposition parties have rejected non-partisan local bodies' elections in Punjab and we have some reservations on the delimitations for local bodies' elections. To a question Gilani said, "I am not in a position to meet the demand of the Al-Mansoor group for the release of my son." They are demanding release of militants who were arrested during Malakand and Swat operation. Gilani said Al-Mansoor Group had avenged to Swat operation by kidnapping my son and they categorically stated that Swat and Malakand operation was a wrong step. He admitted that he had talked to Al-Mansoor Group commander on video-link but he did not demand any ransom.
To a question former premier said Taliban should come to the talk unconditionally and Government should hold positive dialogues with them. He said Taliban are demanding stoppage of drone attacks on their hideouts. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's visit to Washington is expected in the last week of October and he may raise this issue before US Administration. On his return from the visit of US, dialogues between Taliban and present government would be possible. He said appointment of Chief Of Army Staff (CoAS) is a constitutional right of Prime Minister but it must be according to the Constitution. He categorically stated that PPP would not play a role of friendly opposition and it would stand with the masses because it cannot leave the people alone. Gilani said Muslim League-Nawaz and superior judiciary never spared our government in any manner.
