Canadians paid 1.1 percent more for goods and services in September than a year ago, led by higher rents and heating costs, the government said Friday. The inflation figure was slightly more than analysts had forecast, and unchanged from the previous month. Consumers paid more for natural gas and rent in September compared to a year earlier, while mortgage interest costs continued to fall.
Prices for fresh vegetables, meat and fresh fruit rose, as did those for passenger vehicles, clothing and footwear. But prices for dairy products, prescription drugs, gasoline and tuition fees declined. The cost of personal care supplies and equipment and non-prescription drugs also fell.
