Nigeria has started registration of citizens after issuance of National Identity Card to the President of Nigeria on Thursday. The National Identity Card Programme was formally inaugurated at an event held at Nigerian Presidency in Abuja in which President Goodluck Jonathan, First Lady, Vice President and other dignitaries were enrolled for National Identity Card using back end system powered by Nadra.
A Nadra spokesperson, in a statement here, said the National Database Registration Authority (Nadra) was working with its Nigerian counterpart National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to deliver a robust National Identity Management System to assist the Nigerian government in issuance of Smart ID cards to its citizens.
The Nigerian President at the inauguration function observed that Nigeria could not be an exception to the global trend towards Identity Management and Centralised National Identity Database. He further noted that already, "there is a growing quest for specific databases and identity verification by several government institutions and private sector organisations in our country."
Federal Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan congratulated the Nigerian government and expressed his optimism for strengthening of ties between the two countries. He also praised Nadra management and project team for the hard work to achieve the success.
Chairman Nadra, Tariq Malik who had been invited but could not go to Nigeria, in his message said that it was a landmark achievement which would help Nadra get additional IT projects from within Nigeria and across African region.
It is encouraging to see that customised system indigenously developed by Nadra has now empowered the government of Nigeria in issuance of tamperproof, secure Smart National ID Cards to Nigerian citizens.
Nadra is expected to sign an additional business from Nigeria that involves integration of IRIS (eye scan technology) with Nigerian ID Card System, further strengthening the security features of the back-end system, sources in Nadra said.
The Nadra is holding negotiations with National Identity Management Commission to provide multiple back-end modules to verify the biometric enrolment data including facial and fingerprints to comply with International standards.
Nadra has been providing services as a back-end System Integrator for the programme that has been implemented in two phases.
