Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led Punjab government has conveyed to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) that the provincial government is ready to hold local bodies' elections in the province on December 7, 2013. In its request to the ECP, the Punjab government stated that objections regarding delimitation of constituencies for the local bodies' polls across the province will be removed within one week. Following this, the notification for delimitation would be issued by November 4.
It may be noted that the PPP and PTI have expressed reservations over the Punjab government's decision to hold the local bodies' elections in the province on non-party basis and have challenged it in the court. Meanwhile, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah has criticised the failure of the KP government over holding local bodies' elections as promised within six months.
What happened to the KP government's claim of holding polls within six months, he questioned. He said that for the LB polls, 141 Municipal Councils and 35 Zila Councils have been formed. The lists for City and Village Councils have been displayed and hearing on objections on these lists would be carried out by October 30 and final lists of delimitations would be issued by November 4 at the offices of Commissions. The final lists of delimitations of District Councils and Metropolitan Corporations would be displayed by November 10, he said. Rana further said the provincial government would extend all out co-operation to the Election Commission to improve the security situation.
