Additional Inspector General Police (AIG), Shahid Hayat, has said that the use of illegal Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) for crime is a very big issue and if it is resolved crime rate may go down substantially. Addressing and giving replies to various questions of members of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) on Tuesday, he sought the help of KCCI to mitigate the issue as the matter did not fall under his jurisdiction.
The AIG said that unregistered SIMs are the mother of all crimes and if these SIM are blocked 75 percent incidents of extortion would be dropped. Shahid Hayat said strategy is being evolved to overcome extortion of money and street crimes and he sought business community's support to overcome this problem. He said city-wide operation has been launched by the police to curb the deteriorating law and order situation. "The raids are being conducted to arrest criminals regardless of their political affiliation," he added.
He said that improvement in law and order will take time and there may be many ups and downs in law and order condition before normalcy is restored. "Our intention is clear and we want to provide better working environment to the inhabitants of the city", he said. Replying to a question he said that 1100 applications of retired army jawans to join police services have been received. The applications are being short listed and within next few days selected personnel will be sent for short refresher course.
The AIG informed that around 110 police official allegedly involved in extortion and other crimes have been suspended. Inquiry against them is in progress and some of them may be removed from services in near future.
Shahid said that although we are facing acute shortage of manpower still we are carrying operation against criminals. He informed that 15 will be revived and streamlined for quick response from police Leader of Businessmen Group and former President KCCI, Siraj Kassam Teli, emphasised the need for immediate blocking of all the SIMs including registered and unregistered and reissuing them on CNIC and be sent on the address given on CNIC by post He said that if this suggestion is implemented it will automatically eliminate unregistered SIMs.
President KCCI, Abdullah Zaki said due to increasing incident of target killing, extorting, killing threats and street crimes many businesses have shifted from the city to other parts of country and to foreign countries which makes flight of capital. He explained prevailing law and order condition in the city in detail He said that there may be some black sheep in police department and assured strict action against them.
