Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan has announced that his party would table resolutions in the National and provincial Assemblies with a view to stopping Nato supplies to US forces deployed in Afghanistan. He also said Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Chief Hakimullah Mehsud's killing in a drone strike was an attempt to sabotage government's peace talks with Taliban. He was addressing a press conference here on Saturday.
Imran further said Hakimullah was killed a day before talks were set to begin with Taliban. He said they will table separate resolutions in National Assembly, Sindh Assembly and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly seeking the blockade of Nato supplies. "The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly will adopt a unanimous resolution to demand closure of Nato supplies routes and even if we lose our provincial government, we will not let Nato supplies pass through Khyber Pakhtunkhwa," he added. He said that their action of stopping the Nato supplies would be within the limits of law, as the Peshawar High Court (PHC) has also given a verdict to shoot down drones or stop the Nato supply line.
He also suggested calling for an all-party conference in order to review peace process with Taliban that the US has been trying to sabotage. He questioned groups who were involved in bombings in Peshawar, especially an attack on a church. He said the recent drone attack has unraveled the mystery and now we know who wants to sabotage the talks and peace in Pakistan. He disclosed that a US Democrat had told him that they are investing in media in Pakistan in order to misguide the people in the name of so-called war on terror.
According to him, thousands of civilian people including armymen, have been mercilessly killed in drone attacks and despite this the newly-elected government was hesitant to take a tough and clear-cut stance in this regard. The nation is tired of so-called war on terrorism. Economy of the country is falling down, leaving the masses at the mercy of fate. The PML-N has badly failed to take the nation out of crises, adding that the set time to change the destiny of the country has come, so the entire nation should stand in face of corruption and anarchy.
He appealed to the entire nation to get united in order to foil conspiracies hatched against the motherland. He said the people of Pakistan should unite to save Pakistan. "This is a defining moment. Everyone knows who does not want peace in Pakistan," he added.
Meanwhile, The PTI Core Committee in its meeting today, amongst other matters deliberated upon the issue of continuing US drone attacks. It concluded that the US deliberately sabotaged the dialogue process in Pakistan through drone attacks at a time when the federal government, backed by an APC mandate, had finally commenced the initial steps to contact the Taliban leadership. The statement of the Interior Minister reflecting the same substantiates the PTI position.
It also observed that the federal government must look into the three most recent terrorist attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa which further delayed the peace talks, and assess whether all those who are seeking to sabotage the peace process may have been culpable.
The PTI Core Committee has decided the following in continuation of its principled position from the start: that the time has come for all Pakistanis to stand united for peace after over nine years of bloodshed and thwart all efforts to sabotage the same. Legally, the judgement of the PHC of May 2013 on drones clearly states that if the US does not stop drones the Pakistan government must deny all logistic and other support to the US.
Nato supplies must be stopped and remain so till such time that the federal government is able to stop drones and give a clear commitment about the efforts for a structured dialogue for peace. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister has decided to call an emergency session of the provincial assembly to pass this resolution and to build up support with all other parties for this purpose. It is imperative for the Khyber Pukhtunkhwa government to get passed a resolution in the provincial assembly on an emergency basis to stop Nato supplies.
It also decided to present a motion/resolution in National Assembly for the same and they will call for an immediate APC, which must support their decision of stopping Nato supplies, given the disruption of the dialogue process. PTI's provincial parties will also actively come out in support of stopping Nato supplies.
