Mutai captures second New York Marathon title

Kenya's Geoffrey Mutai won his second consecutive New York City Marathon men's title on Sunday after setting a course record in 2011 when the race was last staged. Mutai surged ahead in the 21st mile and won in an unofficial time of 2 hrs, 8mins, 23 secs with Ethiopia's Tsegaye Kebede, a two-time London Marathon winner, finishing second.
Last year's New York Marathon was cancelled because of flooding and devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy in the New York area. Mutai's reward for winning was $100,000 while Kebede claimed the year's World Marathon Majors crown and a $500,000 prize.
