The Punjab government on Sunday turned down a request by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to prepare voters lists for the upcoming local government elections. In a letter, the Punjab government told the ECP that it was not its job to prepare electoral rolls. The provincial government could not prepare voter lists, it said.
On the other hand, the ECP has argued that all state institutions are bound to assist the commission in conducting elections and that its request cannot be denied.
