One of the good things done by Shahbaz Sharif government was arranging totally free higher education for the students of Gilgit-Baltistan in Punjab. It's sanguine to note that Punjab, also, has doubled the reserved seats in professional and technical institutes of Punjab for the students coming from Gilgit-Baltistan. Punjab government spent an amount of Rs 100 million on doubling these reserved seats for GB students.
According to the official data, Shahbaz Sharif government doubled the number of seats in medical colleges from 25 to 50 while those in engineering colleges were increased to 12 from 6. Also, reserved seats in all the 450 technical colleges in Punjab being run under TEVTA were also doubled. Apart from this, the GB students enrolled in these institutes were also entitled of getting free hostel and health facilities during their studies.
Similarly, Punjab government has increased the quota of students of Balochistan in the educational institutions of Punjab from 1,200 to 4,000. It is important to note that besides arranging free education, the shining students of Balochistan, Sindh, KPK, Azad Kashmir and federal capital Islamabad were also included in other students-friendly schemes like laptop scheme, Ujala programme, educational endowment fund and awarding of cash prizes to position-holder students introduced by the Punjab government. Besides promoting education in less-developed areas and relieving the students of fee burden, these steps have also encouraged the students' community, promoted healthy competition and help strengthened the process of national cohesion and solidarity among provinces through the education of their students.
