Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan on Saturday expressed grave concern over the incitement to sectarian violence that is spreading across the country. The Punjab government imposed a rare curfew in the garrison city of Rawalpindi next to Islamabad, after sectarian clashes between two religious groups which left at least eight people dead.
Imran strongly condemned the killing and appealed to people to foil the nefarious designs of hate mongers and enemies of Islam and Pakistan are thwarted by a show of unity across the land. "Those who are spreading this message of hatred amongst Muslims are clearly enemies of Islam and Pakistan and are deliberately destroying the stability and peace of the country. PTI condemns all such agendas", he declared.
The violence erupted on Friday when a procession of Shia marking the most important day of the mourning month of Muharram coincided with a sermon at a nearby Sunni mosque. Angry Shia protesters attacked the mosque and seminary, torching its building and an adjacent market. Officials with the government of Punjab province said Saturday that residents have been ordered to stay in their homes until further notice to prevent further clashes. There has also been a general news blackout in the area.
