President Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) Dr Sarfraz Bashir, in a press statement has expressed extreme concern over ongoing strike by the goods transporters at Karachi Port and Port Qasim. He said that country had to suffer huge losses running into billions of rupees due to transporters' strike just a few months ago, and again the exporters are facing the same situation as goods carriers have goods on strike again.
He said that a large number of export shipments are ready to be shipped as per the deadline given by the foreign buyers, would not reach the ports in time due to strike. If the strike prolongs further, this would lead to great loss to the exporters, fearing cancellation of export orders, he said that Sialkot Export Industry is already facing energy crisis, as there was acute load shedding of electricity and there was a threat of complete shutdown of gas supply to industries in coming days. Similarly importers are also being affected.
The national economy relies heavily on export industry, which is greatly hampered by strike of transporters, he said. The SCCI President further stated that industry is not able to meet international commitments and failure to perform will lead to loss of valued customers, loss of market share as well as damaging Pakistan's reputation as a reliable supplier. He called upon the governments to intervene immediately for resolving the issues of transporters without further delay in order to save the already crushed industry.
