More than 186 processions of Taazia, Alam and Zul-jinnah were taken out in the city on the 10th of Muharram. Mostly processions joined the main procession of Ustad and Shagird Taazia amid tight security. Unprecedented security arrangements have been made in Multan and other parts of Southern Punjab to ward off any untoward incident during the observance of Ashura, the day of martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), on Friday.
Multan was among the most sensitive city across country, army, police and paramilitary personnel have been placed on high alert and deployed at sensitive places of Multan city. These arrangement were also made in Jhang, Bhakkar, Bahawalpur cities. The arrangements appeared to be stricter this year because of threats posed by militants in the wake of killing of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan Chief Hakimullah Mehsud in a US drone attack in North Waziristan and a member of Taliban's Haqqani group, Nasiruddin, in Islamabad.
Regional Police Officer Muhammad Amin Vance said 5,221 police officials was deployed in different areas of the city while civil defence, police, Quami Raza Kars and army personals were performed their duties.
According to City Police Officer (CPO) Multan Sultan Ahmed Gujjar most of the roads leading to bazaars, cantonment areas, Imambargahs, important buildings and residences of VIPs in city remained closed throughout the day. The routes of main Ashura processions have been sealed in Multan, Bahawalpur, Rahimyarkhan, Jhang, Bhakkar, Dera Ghazi Khan and some other cities and walk-through gates have been put in place. Mourners were allowed to join the processions only after a thorough body search by security personnel and volunteers.
