A 'Judicial Commission' and a 'Fact-Finding Committee' have been constituted separately to probe sectarian clashes in Rawalpindi that killed at least nine people as authorities continued curfew for the third day.
A judicial commission headed by Lahore High Court (LHC) Judge Justice Mamoon Rashid Shaikh will conduct on investigation into the Rawalpindi mayhem, which prompted authorities to call in Army to maintain law and order situation in the city.
Chief Justice LHC Umar Atta Bandial constituted the commission, to probe the incident, on the request of the Punjab government.
Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif on Sunday also formed a Fact-Finding Committee on Rawalpindi incident. Former Chairman of Punjab Chief Minister's Inspection Team Najam Saeed would head the committee.
The committee will pinpoint the persons involved in the incident and also name the officials responsible for negligence in administrative and security measures and will submit its report to Chief Minister Punjab in seven days. The committee will make recommendations to avoid such incidents in future.
Sectarian clashes in Rawalpindi on Friday left nine people dead and more than 60 injured, and spawned retaliatory violence in at least two other cities. Fighting erupted in the garrison-city Rawalpindi when a procession coincided with a sermon at a nearby mosque. Army was called in on Saturday to quell sectarian unrest in the city.
Mobile phone networks were suspended continually in Rawalpindi as well as Islamabad for the fourth day after the ninth of Muharram. Police and a large number of soldiers continued to patrol various areas in Rawalpindi as well as adjacent areas of Islamabad.
This is the first time in years that curfew has been imposed in the Punjab province and especially in Rawalpindi , which also houses the Army headquarters. Rawalpindi has been sealed off from Islamabad by containers and the imposition of curfew had ensured that most streets and roads remained deserted and quiet.
Meanwhile, Funeral prayers of three persons killed in the Rawalpindi incident was offered at Liaquat Bagh on Sunday evening. Maulana Samiul Haq led the prayers. A large number of people attended the prayer. Strict security arrangements were made on the occasion.
