The average price of top Kenyan tea rose to $4.10 per kg at this week's auction from $3.57 per kg last week, traders said on Wednesday. Kenya is the world's leading black tea exporter and the crop is a major foreign exchange earner in east Africa's largest economy, alongside horticulture and tourism. Africa Tea Brokers (ATB) said in a market report that Best Broke Pekoe Ones (BP1s) sold at $3.20-$5.00 per kg from $2.36-$4.78 per kg at the previous sale.
Brighter Pekoe Fanning Ones (PF1s) fetched $2.40-$3.11 per kg compared with $2.16-$3.06 last week. ATB said 145,704 packages were offered, and 5.55 percent remained unsold. Last week 144,696 packages of tea were offered, with 12,540 remaining unsold.
