Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan on Thursday said that Saudi Arabia and the US did not seek to influence the trial of General Pervez Musharraf, as "it is purely an internal matter of the country." Talking to journalists outside Supreme Court building, he said the trial would take time while the trial would still be in progress chief of army staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani and Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry would retire.
He said there should be an open trial of the former army chief, adding the general had used the word 'me' in all the decisions including proclamation of November 03, 2007 emergency in the country.
"There are strong evidences against Musharraf but the decision will not be made quickly by the special court," he said. The judges would not be needed to testify before the special court, he said, adding if Musharraf was charged with imprisonment of apex court judges, then the judges would be needed to testify.
TRIAL BUILDING IDENTIFIED Meanwhile, a three-member special court that will conduct the trial of Musharraf under Article 6 has been allowed to conduct the proceedings of the case at the building of Federal Shariat Court. The sources said that Chief Justice Federal Shariat Court had received a request from the law ministry, seeking a space for the trial of Musharraf. They said that the trial of former army chief would be at the courtroom where a one-man commission comprising Justice Shahzado Shaikh of Federal Shariat Court had conducted an inquiry into the Lal Masjid operation.
